About Community Boat Project

Community Boat Project (CBP) was founded 30 years ago to provide experiential learning opportunities for young people. We are a small, impactful nonprofit organization looking for a passionate, skilled Executive Director to steer our organization through its next chapter of growth.

Our mission is to build a stronger community by giving youth job and life skills through adult mentorship. We offer free, experiential, accredited programs to teens and young adults living in Jefferson County.

We offer three core high school  programs: Community Builders, Voyaging, and Into the Wild. Shelter from the Storm is a paid internship for 18 – 24 year olds.

In our Community Builders program, young people learn hands-on skills and cultivate the 21st century skills of critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and collaboration. Of late, young people in this program have been building tiny houses for homeless people. We offer this program at our shop (located on the campus of the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding) and on site at the local high schools.

In our Voyaging program, high school students meet weekly during the school year to practice a wide range of maritime skills. This program culminates in a week-long maritime journey in early summer. In the Voyaging program, young people gain the skills they need to cruise safely or get a head start in a professional maritime career.

Into the Wild is our forest ecology program. Young people participate in day hikes into different ecosystems of the Olympic Peninsula. Into the Wild runs during the school year, and we offer a summer program as well.

Community Boat Project believes in the power of partnership and maintains ongoing collaborations with: the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding, Bayside Housing, Quilcene School District #48, Port Townsend School District #50, Chimacum School District #49, 4-H/WSU, WorkSource, Housing Solutions Network, Quimper Academy/Academy Northwest, Jefferson County Probation, 4-H/WSU and other organizations.

The Community Boat Project team includes five part-time staff members, 20 -25 adult mentors, paid interns and roughly 50 youth participants over the course of the year. We are governed by a dedicated Board of Directors. Our operating budget is approximately $150,000 a year. Major funding comes from foundations with additional support from individuals and local businesses.
