September started our fifth year of the Community Boat Project. And we are busy!
Four free, accredited programs are underway:
On-the-water we have Voyaging (seamanship and leadership class) on Friday. Wednesday is Sailor/Scientist, studying marine science and doing water testing in Hadlock Bay.
In the shop on Thursday the Boatbuilding Class has several projects going. The first planks are on the new voyaging craft designed by Ed Louchard. 33’ feet long, tops’l schooner rig, it looks to live up to its name Epic. We are also repairing a 1945 Monomoy lifeboat which will be program and escort boat for PSVS. Thirdly, we are overhauling a 23’ sliding seat, voyaging kayak; a unique vessel.
We also welcome CFAR (Community for Felicity Ann Restoration) on site. Felicity Ann was the vessel Ann Davidson used in her solo Trans-Atlantic. Ann was the first woman to cross any major ocean solo. On Mondays and Tuesdays a group of dedicated women will be working on Felicity Ann’s rebuild. On Wednesdays, high school women join in.
In addition we have our Saturday Free Public sails in the community boats Onward and Dragonheart.
Our site restoration goes on with fall plantings. 17 fruit trees were planted in October.
Removal of invasive species and replacement with native trees continues through November.
